Lunch with the fishermen of Lang Co - Vietnam!

It took us some time to find Vinh with his boat, with the heaps of shells and tires around (that are used as floats), but finally we spotted him on the lake's shore. Today, Vinh would take us to his fishing installation in the middle of Lang Co lagoon and then to his home, that is also built on stilts over the water.

Lang Co is a brackish lagoon, located a little inland and just north of the Hai Van pass, on the way from Hoi An to Hue. This trip to the fishermen of Lang Co can optionally be included in a travel day between these two places. It will give you a unique insight into the daily life of local fishermen and on top of that, you will be served a delicious, local lunch, totally in Vietnamese style.

Vinh first took us in his motorized canoe, to the fishing installation in the middle of the lagoon. I noticed a pair of eyes, painted on the front of the canoe, that I have often spotted on Vietnamese boats. The eyes are to ward off danger from the sea. Once we reached the installation, I clambered up the uneven wooden steps to the covered platform. On the platform, there are huge pulleys, with which you can lower a large fishing net horizontally into the water. Of course, I had to try out such a pulley, but pulling up a net turned out to be quite a task. We paddled in a round, floating basket to the center of the net to reel in today's catch. Several car tires are suspended in the waters around the installation. Shells stick it, that later can then be harvested again.

We continued by boat to Vinh's house, which also stands on stilts over the water. He introduced us to his parents. His mother was already busy cooking, squating in front of a two-burner gas stove and stirring long chopsticks in a couple of pans. The freshly caught fish was quickly added to the menu. Half an hour later, a fantastic lunch was served in front of us, with soup, calamari, shrimp, fish, vegetables and of course a big heap of steamed rice. We were sitting on the floor at a low table, enjoying the differrent dishes. Back on the main land, we said goodbye to Vinh with a full stomach and with many impressions, and continued our trip by car to the city of Hue.

Would you also like to experience this optional trip? Please let us know and we will include it in the travel day from Hue to Hoi An (or vice versa).
